Gedymina Viewing Tower
Szczawno-Zdrój
The Gedymina Viewing Tower is one of the most interesting tourist attractions near Wałbrzych and is becoming one of the most popular viewpoints in Lower Silesia. Located on Gedymina Hill in the spa town of Szczawno-Zdrój, the tower attracts both local residents and tourists looking for peaceful walking trails combined with stunning mountain panoramas. Similar to the viewing tower in Świeradów-Zdrój and the treetop walk in Janské Lázně, the tower features a spiral design and is accessible for wheelchair users.
The surrounding forests and fresh air make this place perfect for family walks, romantic trips, or a short escape from the noise of the city.
Viewing Tower in Szczawno-Zdrój – tickets and opening hours
The Gedymina Tower is located on the hill of the same name at an altitude of 532 meters above sea level. It is open 24 hours a day and admission is free for all visitors. The only limitation is the maximum number of people allowed on the tower at the same time. Once 80 visitors are inside, the entrance gate closes automatically and reopens only after some people leave. One slightly annoying feature is the automatic voice announcement played when the limit is reached, which interrupts the silence and birdsong. However, this is necessary for safety reasons and for protecting the structure, which weighs 100 tons and is 33 meters high.
Accessibility of the Gedymina Tower for disabled visitors
Several trails lead to the viewing tower, but the most popular one starts at the Słoneczna Polana parking area on Narciarska Street. The parking lot is relatively small and quickly fills up on sunny weekends and holidays. Unfortunately, there are no designated disabled parking spaces, and at the beginning of the trail there is a "No Entry" sign with additional information stating that it also applies to disabled visitors, making access by private car impossible without breaking traffic regulations.
The trail leading to the viewpoint follows natural forest paths that can be uneven and steep in some places. For wheelchair users, reaching the tower can be difficult or sometimes even impossible, especially after rainfall or during winter when the surface becomes slippery. In good weather conditions, assistance from at least two caregivers is recommended, as the trail from the parking area is approximately 700 meters long and continuously uphill. While this may not be a challenge for most walkers, it can be demanding for wheelchair users.
Climbing the viewing tower and overall impressions
The tower itself was designed in a modern style using wood and steel elements, allowing it to blend naturally into the surrounding landscape. Due to the relatively small diameter of the structure, the 300-meter spiral ramp has a noticeable incline and usually requires assistance from another person. Halfway to the top there is a small viewing platform where visitors can rest, although the view from this point is limited mostly to nearby trees.
Once at the top, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Sudetes Mountains, the Wałbrzych Mountains, and nearby towns such as Szczawno-Zdrój and Wałbrzych. On clear days, the panorama is exceptionally wide and even allows you to see Śnieżka, the highest peak of the Karkonosze Mountains. Visitors should also be prepared for noticeable swaying of the tower, which was quite surprising to me compared to other viewing towers I have visited before.
Szczawno-Zdrój Viewing Tower – is it worth visiting?
Despite the difficulties related to reaching the tower, the Gedymina Viewing Tower left a very positive impression on me. It proves that modern tourist attractions can be designed with accessibility in mind, although the surrounding infrastructure still needs improvement. The opportunity to reach the top using the spiral path and admire the panoramic views of the Sudetes makes the visit truly rewarding.
If you are planning to visit Szczawno-Zdrój and enjoy peaceful forest walks combined with beautiful views, the Gedymina Viewing Tower is definitely worth adding to your travel plans. However, it is best to choose a dry day and bring appropriate assistance if you use a wheelchair. Despite a few imperfections, this is one of those places that stays in your memory for a long time thanks to both the scenery and the unique experience of moving high above the treetops.
